Fix icon is not showing in Web browsers (Bing/Google)

In this tutorial, we will learn how to set up an icon correctly for display in Bing and Google searches, as well as what to do if our website is online but the icon is not showing.

This is a simple procedure, and it can help you boost your website quality.

Adding an icon to our website

To avoid any kind of issue with the icons, we will follow the next steps:

Create your website icon 32×32 size and in .ico format
Place it in the root of your website, e.g., technolympus.com/favicon.ico
Add it to your website’s sitemap, which is usually in your website root. if not, you can easily create it and add the favicon.ico like in technolympus.com/sitemap.xml
Ensure your robots.txt is not blocking the icon
Finally, add it to your website header like
- <link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico">

These are all the steps that we have to follow, Now you can index your website in Bing and Google and see your icon there

Verifying your icon

It may take at most one week to propagate; this way, you can also update your icon. It is often easier to update in Google search, since it will propagate in around 3 days; however, for Bing search results, it can take around 2 weeks, but if you don’t see results, the best solution is to raise a ticket in Bing, since they will not reindex it.

Fix Bing is not showing the icon

We will create a ticket for solving the favicon issue, it takes around 1 week to be solved:

Go to Webmaster Support – Bing Webmaster Tools, and select Raise Support Request
Log in with the account that you are using for your project
It will redirect you to fill the form for Bing Webmaster tools support
Choose the website you need help with
Select Bad Search Result
Select Issue with Favicon
